Trials of Osiris - Population tracking

Here are the population numbers from Destiny Trials Report: Week 1 - 380k players. Week 2 - 340k players (-10% from launch). Week 3 - 300k players (-20% from launch). Week 4 - 278k players (-27% from launch). Week 5 - 235k players (-38% from launch). Week 6 - 245k players (-37% from launch). Week 7 - 205k players (-47% from launch). Week 8 - 189k players ( -50% from launch). Week 9 - 171K players ( -55% from launch) Week 10 - 146k players (- 62% from launch) Week 11 - 164k players (-57% from launch) I’ll drop this here for historical and tracking value. Logically I’m not expecting to see a big change either direction until Bungie implements some changes for improvement. I would love to see them turn it around. I’m still interested in hearing what changes will bring people back, and it’s clear now what keeps players away. It’s impossible to know really how much the account recovery and streamed carries are keeping the population afloat as well as causing damage that makes players not want to participate, but I would assume it’s a factor.

I think the bounty for the 3 win reward sounds pretty good. I'll probably start playing trials more consistently when that comes out. I didn't mind getting the sh!t beaten out of me that much, because it was forcing me to try to improve and learn. The problem was that my clan mostly gave up so I had to use lfg, which meant it was inconsistent and took ages to find a team. Also (idk why), in almost every match I played, my team would get destroyed; I got to three wins once, and never reached it again. Sometimes I would struggle to get one win in a whole gaming session. Whereas in comp I'm perfectly good (nearly reached legend a few times but not quite) Personally, there wasn't any specific problem, just minor irritations that added up (getting beaten constantly and lack of rewards mainly)

    • I don't think Trials----in its current form----is fixiable. Bungie brought it back without fixing the foundational problems that afflicted it in D1.....and added NEW problems rooted in a poorly-designed loot system that was a band-aid for an incrediblythin loot table. At its core, Trials isn't a competitive event. Its a predatory one. Where good players are allowed to beat up on weaker players for shits, giggles and prizes. While those weaker players basically get a FOOT in the face, and get told to "Get Good". That approach may work in a dedicated comp shooter...and players with hoop dreams of e-sports. But Destiny is a loot game...and the vast majority of its players come to the game with that RPG gamer's mindset. Which means they simply aren't going to tolerate being treated that way. So the event itself isn't enjoyable enough to retain players....so it then has to rely on loot. Problem is that Bungie has this hardcore mentality that you only get loot if you win....while (always) grossly underestimating the difficulty of winning for the average player because of the predatory nature of the event itself. Which is why Trials' return was a perfect shitstorm. 1. No Adept weapons....meant no motivation to go Flawless. 2. So the top players basically FARMED weaker players for tokens and for loot. Revealing the predatory nature of the event itself. 3. Because top players were hanging out in the lower brackets....those weaker players just got stomped from the word "Go"....and literally couldn't win enough matches to even be able to turn in their tokens to get anything. So the playlist is rotting from the bottom up even faster than I'd predicted. Though the cheating problem on PC isn't helping. What will fix Trials. IMO, COMP is the "fix" for Trials. What are the band-aids that might SAVE Trials and make it tolerable? Basically bring back the House of Wolves version of Trials. 1. Two tiered loot system. One participation-based. The other performance based. 2. The lower tier armor drops as a random drop at the end of matches. Lower tier weapons are rewards for wins and for bounties that don't involve winning. 3. Higher Tier armor is only awarded for wins. 4. Adept waapons for flawless runs. That way top players are motivated to push on deep into a card because that's how you get the top teir armor and Adept weapons. While average players who are willing to stay in there and take their beating, can (in time) acquire the lower tier loot....and work towards getting better and getting a shot at the top tier loot. That was the most workable version of Trials....and I think every one of them since has been an unstable cludge that was doomed to failure.

        • The biggest issue is that Bungie clearly didn't do what they said they did, which was to completely rework it and bring it back once it was ready. It's simply Elimination on a smaller selection of maps, with card matching and a terrible reward system. The rewards system for the game mode was broken from the outset (this was obvious from week 1), which destroys the card based matching system immediately. All we have is a more toxic version of Elimination that punishes all but the elite players who are busy farming. Anyone else who wants a reasonable shot at a visit to The Lighthouse needs to rush to get it done on a Friday once it's live, otherwise most needn't bother. They apparently told their select Streamers and Content Creators about its return months and months ago. Why didn't they get them involved and gather feedback before deeming it worthy for release...?

                • Stop guardians resetting there card and also once you've gone flawless you are only able to play other flawless people.

                  • I'm interested in seeing next season's data as well. Lots of variables to consider when thinking about the population of Trials. Another data set of a different season can bring more validity to the data if Trials remains untouched.
