"Fixing" unintended movement abilities was a mistake

I'd like to tell you a little story about a game me and my clanmates invented called "Tesseract Sumo". Back in September of last year we had just finished a run of SoS prestige and didnt know what to do after, so some went offline and the rest were just goofing around. For some reason we ended up in the "Orrery" lost sector on Nessus and one of my friends noticed that you could climb the walls at the end and crouch through a little hole to get out of bounds. We instantly followed him to see for ourselves and were amazed to find out how far out ouf bounds you could actually go. The view out there was stunning, you could really see the skybox in all of its glory, but the best thing was yet to come. Looking up we realized, we were actually standing next to a giant tower. I remembered having seen a video of some speedrunner using mountaintop sticky nades to climb walls. This inspired us to try and climb up that tower. After quite some time and a lot of falls to our deaths, we discovered a consistent path that led us to the place where our own little gamemode would be born. Up there was a long, rectangular plateau with a view Calus would be amazed by. Of course we had to take some screenshots. In our clan it is common courtesy, as soon as someone stands still for a few seconds, to slam them into the next wall with a shoulder charge or worldline zero heavy attack. So as soon as i saw my friend trying to take a picture, i switched to my worldline and charged at him. To my surprise he knew what was coming and jumped up in the perfect moment, making me launch myself off the platform and into my death. We burst into laughter as i fell for a good minute. After i had climbed my way back up, he tried to push me off again. This turned into an intense battle to see who could launch the other off the plateau first. We even set some rules, like, the battle begins when both combatants use an emote, and all movement abilities that could be used to save yourself from falling are forbidden. This became the go to activity anytime we waited for a teammate to start the next raid, anytime we were burnt out from grinding nightfalls all day, anytime we were bored and had nothing else to do. I really miss those days and wish we could go back. This is one of the best memories i made in Destiny and it was all thanks to Bungie letting us be creative with the stuff they put into the sandbox. Some time later an update changed the way sticky nades worked. We were no longer able to stand on them, which made the way up to our spot impossible and killed our favorite pastime. We still had our Worldline though so we looked for other places to play tesseract sumo in. Though we did find some cool areas, the thrill of sending one of your best friends into a minute long fall to their death just wasnt there... The next best thing we had left was to tesseract fly in weird places. That way strikes became races and unreachable places became challenges among the people in our clan. The recent seasonal update took that away from us as well. If it had only been tesseract flying, i may have been able to accept the changes but now going fast is absolutely impossible. Where i was once able to scoot past the ogres in Pit of Heresy like a badass i now get stomped to death or pushed off the edge. All the cool sword and relic movement i was used to since D1 is just gone for no reason and that saddens me greatly. But this is not only about me, think about the amount of hours hardcore speedrunning teams have put into this game perfecting their every move including sword and relic skating as well as tesseract flying. At AGDQ this year countless people saw what some incredibly talented players can do in Destiny. This speedrun gave our beloved game a lot of publicity and i bet it inspired many people to try out new light or even get into speedrunning Destiny themselves. It would just break my heart to have to tell some of those people that the fun stuff they saw at AGDQ is not possible anymore for no reason whatsoever. TLDR - Bungie used to tolerate unintended ways of movement like sword/relic skating and jumping on sticky nades, fixing those things took away a lot of the fun in the neutral game department and really hurt the speedrunning community. Thanks for coming to my TED Talk

  • So now speed running is less glitching out of the map at 1000 mph? Good.

    • I did the Heroic adventure 'The Up and Up' earlier. And the whole time, I just thought about how much fun we used to have soaring over the otherwise totally pointless exercises in this game, that we only grind through to level up. I used to just skate around the place for the hell of it, for no rhyme or reason. I legit miss its presence in the game, from flying over my objectives and into the great green yonder all the way to making slight miscalculations and splattering myself against a rock or rubble. And its not just worldline skating, the boost you get from orbs in SotP is gone too. All in all, these changes just took something everyone seemed to enjoy and tore them out for the sake of it. This is the growing theme - just like arc web nerfs, just like emblem changes, just like most things that Bungie gets flak for - they answered a question nobody asked, one starting with "What if we remove...".

    • To make a long story short - basically you found something actually fun in the game and Bungie fixed it to make it not doable.

The sticky nade platforms were a small issue. The fact that Warlocks are now entirely unable to skate in any capacity, not just with with swords but with hold-items, greatly limits the possibilities in speedrunning as well as the overall fun factor. The only reason I completed the WZ Catalyst was so I could blast through content at a pace I felt comfortable with. It made the game more enjoyable when I could hit really good skips like the chasm on Scarlet Keep.

      • I can see how it could create issues down the line. But man a nerf directed at speed runners always felt weird. Sword skating hurt the average player in no way. Didn’t ruin world firsts for raids which you could argue is the sole place a speed advantage could grant a tangible reward. It did make warlocks and swords good in weird way. I’d like to see them add an exotic with an “unintended “ bug that re enables a movement ability if done perfectly very similar to what we once had but for all characters maybe. Maybe let mountaintop grenade hopping come back but that one I can see creating more issues since it would just let you climb up and over so many things, which would mean they could build encounters in the future around the fact that players can just climb up and over shit or just fix that bug. Fun as -blam!- bug for sure but one took work and the other didn’t so I can’t blame them. I would like to see it come back as it never seemed to be used to truly exploit anything of value, or broke anything in a way that hurt the game. Maybe they did it because something coming would be ruined by it? Like the rigs nerf for that new public event thing we got. Idk just an idea cause I really don’t see why else they’d do it

        • If you guys still play D1, you can glitch into The Citadel on Venus. It's pretty similar to the arena you guys used, and you can free fall for over a minute if you get knocked off. Maybe give that a shot?

        • Bungie has a way of ruining things like this and it dates back to Halo multiplayer days. Remember rocket/sword cancelling? That was hella fun.

        • There’s a way to glitch out of the map on io and get to a similar spot... I recommend looking up a YouTube video, or if I can figure out how to upload videos here I’ll do that

          • As much as i hate the change aswell. There was a problem when you couldnt do that on a hunter or titan without a super use while as a warlock you could just bypass 90% of the content and get the same reward as the other 2 without hardly any work or effort. The super launching aspect of worldline shouldnt have been changed as every class had access to it but the flying with just a standard jump was WAY to busted if you wanted to try a speedrun on anything else but a warlock.

            • Yeah I'd have been pissed to if they ever fixed the vex barrier in D1 (as you're doing the black garden mission keep going instead as if you're doing the undying mind and there's a wall that will repel you if you run, sword swipe, or shoulder charge into it. Dumb absolutely but trying to skip that bridge on the actual mission you were working on was a ton of fun or just seeing how far you'd fly)

              • I know this place. And you dont need the sticky nades to go up there. Ive been up there many times with my clan when we were borred. And none of us were using the moutaintop.

They nerf the stupidist shit because people find holes in thier "amazing content" and it makes bungus look silly. Thier egos are so big that this cannot be tolerated.

              •
Bungie used to tolerate unintended ways of movement like sword/relic skating
No, they never have. They tried left and right to fix the bridge encounter in Crota's end, and they specifically removed BladeDance gliding in D1.

                • Oh yes, blame bungie for actually doing their job fixing the unintended bugs in the game then also condemn them for being lazy and not fixing bugs in the game.

                  • Reminds me of Tower of Power in H2’s Ascension map, where you make a custom hame and put a stationary mini gun on the tower and teams fight to take it and hold it. And the custom boxing game on Lockout. Only plasma pistols but no shooting. Everyone jumps in the square ring and goes punch crazy. Nothing like a 16 man brawl lol Bungie used to know how to let us have fun with their sandbox. Used to.
