Why is naming a cheater WITH EVIDENCE a bannable offence?

Cheating in Destiny 2 is at an all time high, Competitive kill and win trade lobbies are at an all time high and with YouTubers like TritanArmy posting literal guides about how to make these lobbies and get people the loot they don't deserve... It's literally tearing competitive apart That being said, i fail to see how exposing a cheater with INDEFINITE evidence should be a bannable offence It's about time we started taking the fight to the cheaters, by exposing them

  • Because they dont care. Look back through the series, trials had the immune enemies cheat where theyd just sit on the flag until they won, nothing was done until gothalion had it happen to him on stream and bungie were forced to hand out bans. Until either: A) Community outrage is so bad they have to acknowledge it and do something (clayisclutch). B) A big streamer has it happen live and makes an issue of it (such as gothalion). Bungie will not do a thing, they simply do not care, "we take cheating seriously" the ninjas spam "use our in game reporting system" they say - it goes right off into the void

    • In the end all they care about is people playing the game. That's why recoveries, lag switching, and other forms of cheating still exist.

        • The real question isn't why you do get banned for naming and shaming, it's why you don't get banned for cheating, or perhaps why it takes months to years to ban cheaters on the rare occasion that they do get banned. Take for instance a certain someone who spent years cheating in D1 and finally got banned a year into D2 after sufficient compaints both in the forums and on youtube. Since naming and shaming is about the only thing that will get you banned, I'll avoid saying his name. But you know his name, don't you, Bungie? >.<

          • The useless P2P tech Bungie still uses for PvP makes it very easy for someone to appear like they are cheating when they are in fact not (yet another reason why we need dedicated servers). And can you imagine the amount of constant crap slinging that would occur from salty pvp players every time they thought they had been beaten by a cheater? These forums would just become a cycle of constant accusations and witch hunting. If you have the evidence, send it through to Bungie. Also "INDEFINITE" is the wrong use of that word. I think you mean "Definitive".

            • Because the only individuals that can prove that evidence is Bungie themselves. You and I have 0 tools to actually prove what is going on being the scenes. Accusing others of breaking the terms of service (whether there is actual cheating or not) leads to harassment - which is against the Code of Conduct and will be removed. Naming and shaming others has never been allowed on Bungie.net in almost 20 years. Use the report form that Bungie provides if you believe that someone is cheating. No need to post it on the forums.

              • There's been a lot of situations where people fake videos and other "evidence" that completely destroy someone's online reputation. To prevent this Bungie has this policy in place. Each gaming company kind of does this differently and it works well in different ways. The main problem with Bungie's way is that although they stop name and shame it makes it very hard for anyone to see what they are doing. It makes perfect sense for them to say people are innocent until proven guilty; however, if someone is guilty, they should announce it. Lord knows that there are cheaters that have been around so long that they have built a reputation for themselves. A certain someone who likes to grasp pottery (if you get what I mean) has honestly become a meme. If someone is guilty, and it has been proven by Bungie that they are. They should be named, and they should be shamed. Cheating in an online game is just so scummy. You're ruining other people's night.

              • So, I'm totally against people cheating for the most part; however, I'm going to play Devil's Advocate here. PVP is in quite possibly the worst state it has ever been, horrible matchmaking, horrible balance, just a complete mess. For the life of me I don't understand why Bungie insists on tying quests and weapons to PVP, a large portion of your community wants nothing to do with it. So...you take that large portion and offer them a horrid grind through PVP where they'll probably just quit the game all together, or, they go find lobbies and work around the issue....don't hate the player, hate the game.

Public shaming is bad and even illegal depending where you are from, so this policy protects you and Bungie. When you suspect someone is cheating, report them in game and record a video, upload it to YouTube, make it not listed and send it to Bungie via the suspected cheating form in the link below. https://www.bungie.net/en/Help/Troubleshoot?oid=13967

                    • I realise this is a slightly over the top reference, but it's essentially for the same reason you report crimes to the police instead of posting on twitter and hoping someone does something about it. This is a forum to discuss the game, it's not a reporting tool, that already exists. If more people actually used it instead of posting here, reddit or on social media, then maybe more might be done.

                      • so what does publicly shaming someone actually do? they wont care that you know they cheat/cheese, and your pestering them will be blocked and then thats that. unless you desire dozens or hundreds of people to harass them, then, well, congratulations, you have countless people getting blocked and reported too now. either way, though, you yourself have now done something deplorable, are you gonna punish yourself now in penance? theres rules and systems in place for a reason, and you cant just decide you no longer want to follow some rules in order to "enforce" some others, because you've already lost any good intention by doing that.

                        • Too many people are unaware that a ddos shuts down a persons entire network for 10-20min and most people consider “boosting” to be cheating. Boosting is 100% impossible to control, its in every single game.

                            • This is simple. Bungie already has a report feature for bans. That's already covered. Posting there names here is not going to get the attention of the enforcement team. Two posting their name here only makes the ones named get publicly shamed, and shunned. Three, you might think they are cheating, but you could be wrong. That happens alot. I know people that have yet go get killed legit. Every death is due to a lag switcher, every disconnect a ddoss. This forum would be nothing but morons claiming so and so cheated, and likely never be right. So it makes sense that it's not allowed. Use the report feature, and move on. Nobody likes a cheater, but it is just a game too. You can't let it stress you out so much.

You have private ways to report cheaters. There's no need for witch hunting around the forum, it's already toxic enough without that kind of content. Also you could be wrong in your assumptions about cheating (you wouldn't be the first to be wrong) and you'd be falsely accusing someone publicly, with all consequences that would bring to that person.

                                • It’s still Naming and Shaming. Just report them. If you were caught doing something wrong, would you want everyone to make a big fuss about it? Or would you rather just be punished in private?

                                  • The problem is that they don't hand out harsh bans. Some of these people have been caught but since they receive such light punishments they don't care. We're talking you can't play for a week type stuff. Not your IP is banned or platform banned. You should lobby for that instead.

It can become a witch hunt. I'm sure Bungie doesn't want their forums to become havens for harassment. An innocent gamer could end up as a victim. You always have to worry about crazy gamers, like Tyler Barriss, going to the next level and "swatting" someone for payback.
