My Unpopular Opinion of the New Lore Books

Hello! I’m honestly not sure why I feel the need to inflict my opinion upon the #Lore tab instead of writing a new LfD, however this thought has been brewing in my head for some time now. Without any one that I know invested in the Destiny universe, this is the one place I can consider an outlet. Anyways... when I first heard of the new Lore books being introduced in Forsaken, I was ecstatic. I thought, “Finally! More things to speculate on!” ... However, when they were finally released, I went through a good amount of them on Ishtar, like the cheater I am. At first, I was really impressed with the writing, and they certainly do expand on a lot of characters! I am not bashing them for that. The thing is, I fell in love with the Destiny universe with the amount of mystery mixed in, that was always possible to solve and observe. With the Book of Sorrow, they laid out a great story, but they always kept you guessing. “Who was the Leviathan?” “How do the Worm Gods see what is happening all the time?” With these Lore books, they lay it all out for you. Nothing is really left for you to ponder on, besides maybe a couple of vague speculations you could make. And even those speculations are short-lived, for example: “Where did Variks go?” “He went to save his race by becoming a Kell. Mithrax may have something to do with it.” “Oh.” Do you see what I mean? The shallowness of how safe Bungie got with the writing backfired for me. By all means they are great stories, and the character development gives you a greater respect for the character in game. It’s just... not what I would consider a tool to diving deeper into the universe. Plus, tell me the amount of posts you have seen about the Drifter and Calus, along with the Darkness? That’s why I’m so ecstatic about Joker’s Wild and Penumbra, they left you with plenty of backstory to keep you guessing on what may happen next. Notice how “Drifter’s” book is all about Shin documenting what he does, and Calus doesn’t even have a book! And the Darkness is something people have been wondering about for years. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Anyways. Expect an LfD about something later on this week (hint, think Golden Age). Thanks for reading my opinion that really does not matter, and has no intentional harm upon your own.

  • Well that’s crap, but then again, you don’t want to be subverted all the time.

  • It seems that many are missing the main point of what you are saying. I personally agree with you. I'm not a fan of the new lore or how open it is. In all honesty I see much of the story now as an attempt to emulate the style of the former stories. Honestly, I'm just not a fan. Also, I preferred stories about the enemy races that humanized them somewhat. The much more personal nature of the writing and focus on certain characters and the Awoken is quite offputting for me. I don't like Mara or the Awoken. The lore on Calus and the incidents on the Cabal homeworld were much more interesting to me, and more in line with the themes of Destiny.

I partly agree with you. Since mysterys are a great part of my life i would want a lore with deeper mysteries, like in destiny one

      • I agree with you for the most part. The reason I fell in love with the first game despite the...issues it had was because it had this feeling of mystery. “What happened?”. “Why did it happen?”. “Will it happen again?”. I personally love the lore books but I feel like they didn’t have enough mystery to it.

Let's hope they do expand more on the characters mentioned in the Cabal booklet in-game especially in Penumbra. You know, the other members who were involved in orchestrating Ghaul's coup particularly Calus' own daughter!

        • I’m pretty sure the way it’s presented goes in line with the game’s. Unless there’s a sub book in each, no mystery? Or answer one, give another? If it’s not answered in game, I’d rather know what’s up through some means. Unless your looking for Kingdom Hearts type lore here, I’d stick with this model. Where are those D1 writers anyway?

          • Do you wanna know what Mithrax has to do with it? What Variks is actually doing? How he’s planning on becoming Kell? The books actually do raise a lot of questions if you really open your mind to things.

            • Well yes because everything needs an answer at some point. Also, your point about Variks perplexes me. We know his goal, we have absolutely no damn idea what or how he’s doing.
