Improved Weapon Mod Concept

I accept your application. You're hired.

111

This would be so broken, but hell yes.

22

Good ideas, but I'd prefer an alternative.

16

God-roll Antiope-D? No thanks. I'll keep my money.

I um... didn't read it...

TL:DR - basically, dismantle weapons and get things like scopes and basic perks which you can then put on a different weapon. You know, make weapon mods actually do something. Scroll to the very bottom to see a brief representation of the idea. _________________________ Many players miss the old grind trying to roll the perfect weapon.... the best way to solve that would probably be adding strike specific loot with random perks so people can keep grinding Imago Loops... but I had an alternative idea for that problem that expands the current weapon modding system. As of now, all you can do is change the element of a weapon or add ⯎5 to it... But what if players could grind weapons for the unique parts and perks they contain, and then apply those parts onto a different weapon. Still with me? Let's keep going. So, let's say I've just got a new Auto Rifle. I love the look of it and how it performs, but I don't necessarily like the perks and scopes the weapon has. Let's take a look at this weapon: Origin Story ⬠ Legendary Auto Rifle
⮽ Precision Frame This weapon's recoil pattern is more predictably vertical. ⯎ 300⠀⠀╽╽╽ 32 ██████████ 450 RPM ██▌29 Impact ███████ 70 Range ████▌46 Stability ████▌47 Reload Speed ████ 43 Handling
⯐ Hitmark IS Agile sight. • Slightly increases range • Increases handling speed ⯐ Red Dot Micro Agile sight. Short zoom. • Increases range • Increases handling speed

⯑ Appended Mag This weapon's magazine is built for higher capacity. • Increases magazine size ⯑ Flared Magwell Optimized for fast reloading. • Slightly increases stability • Greatly increases reload speed

✪ Rampage Kills with this weapon temporarily grant increased damage. Stacks 3x.
Source: http://db.destinytracker.com/d2/en/items/1644162710-origin-story
Alright, so by now you should have looked into the spoiler box above. Pretty cool with all the icons and pictures in there, huh? I've been using Microsoft Word, so this should be a pretty legit post. Anyways, in the spoiler box above, you saw the stats and perks of Origin Story, it's just like everyone else's, but today I'm going to change that. Before we can do anything, we're going to need some new parts so we can replace the old ones. So let's break down some Legendaries and see what we get. ⋯ Okay. so you might hate me for doing this, but I'm going to dismantle a Nameless Midnight Scout Rifle. Normally, I would get a few Weapon Parts and Legendary Shards from it, but for the sake of this concept, let's say dismantling a weapon has a chance to drop one of its perks.
⯐ Rifle Scope SSF Weapon Perk Focused scope. Long zoom. • Slightly increases range • Slightly decreases handling speed
Hey, looks like I got a new scope. This would go perfect with my Origin Story. I might replace one of my exsisting sights with it. You know what, I'm feeling pretty lucky, lets dismantle another one.
✪ Explosive Payload Weapon Perk Projectiles create an area-of-effect detonation on impact.
Awesome! I think that's good enough, lets head down to the Gunsmith start the modding process. Now, Banshee probably hasn't told you, but he has some new secret Weapon Mods for sale, so I'm going to pick one up since I'm here.
◪ Fallen Disruptor Weapon Mod Slightly increases damage dealt against Fallen enemies, especially Shanks.
I'm almost broke after buying that so let's get to it and apply these modifications onto my Auto Rifle. ⋯ Alright! So unfortunately, I had a few other Weapon Perks I couldn't use because apparently Auto Rifles aren't compatable with Cluster Bombs... but whatever, here's my new Auto Rifle: Origin Story (Modded) ⬠ Legendary Auto Rifle
⮽ Precision Frame This weapon's recoil pattern is more predictably vertical. ⯎ 300⠀⠀╽╽╽ 32 ██████████ 9000+ RPM ██▌29 Impact ███████ 70 Range ████▌46 Stability ████▌47 Reload Speed ████ 43 Handling
⯐ Hitmark IS Agile sight. Short zoom. • Greatly increases handling speed • Slightly increases range ⯐ Red Dot 2 MOA Snapshot sight. Short zoom. • Slightly increases range • Increases handling speed ⯐ Rifle Scope SSF (Modded) 🟊 Focused scope. Long zoom. • Slightly increases range • Slightly decreases handling speed

⯑ Appended Mag This weapon's magazine is built for higher capacity. • Increases magazine size ⯑ Alloy Magazine (Modded) 🟊 Faster reloads when the magazine is empty.

✪ Explosive Payload (Modded) 🟊 Projectiles create an area-of-effect detonation on impact.

◪ Fallen Disruptor (Modded) 🟊 Does serious damage against Explosive Shanks. You're welcome.

If that's too much information to take in at once, here's a simplified version:
Origin Story Legendary Auto Rifle (Modded)⠀ RPM⠀⠀⠀⠀ |⠀⠀ █████████ ░ Impact⠀⠀ ⠀|⠀⠀ ██▌ Range ⠀⠀⠀|⠀⠀ ███████ ▓ Stability ⠀⠀|⠀⠀ ████▌ Reload ⠀ ⠀|⠀⠀ ████▌ Handling ⠀ |⠀⠀ ████ ▓ ⯎ 300⠀⠀⠀╽╽╽ 32
⮽ Precision Frame This weapon's recoil pattern is more predictably vertical.

✪ Explosive Payload (Modded) Projectiles create an area-of-effect detonation on impact.

Hope you guys liked this concept. I'd love to hear what you guys think about this idea. Also, if you had this kinda freedom to modify weapons, tell me what weapon would you modify and what perks would you replace? Also, thanks for readi

  • I like how d1 had perks that could improve stability by a lot, but would reduce mag size. This is a good idea, but they might have to limit it a little bit to keep everything from being super OP. I had a SR is D1 that had max stability, firefly, and a great scope. the 4th perk was rescue mag which was ok. I got another of the exact same, except it had triple tap. I would have loved to have this god roll scout in d1, and have different guns in d2.

Some parts of your idea would be broken and I think you can do better - but it's still a good idea that deserves to be talked about and earns my upvote. The weapon mods idea has been bounced around in several forms and I have heard a few that push for dismantling for mods. However you look at it, the mods for weapons are severely underutilized. On weapons you only get mods that can change energy type and put a +5 bonus on a weapon without modifying or adjusting its behavior. Bungie can do better than this and allow for more creativity in weapon building by the players. As far as the multiple mod slots idea goes - I don't think that will happen. Any iteration of it will only use the mod slot that's there already. Now, multiple mod slots in order to distinguish a legendary from an exotic on the other hand...

  • The concept is great and I like it but Bungie needs to add alot of new perks to the pool and good ones so there is desirable perks. Although explosive rounds sounds unbeleivably op for an auto it would obviously be nerfed to hell and back but I get what your saying and I dig it. The only thing is what I was saying above, they need to add a ton of good perks to the game to make this system or any customizing system work. Right now I would say there is 5 perks that are good: hc rounds, exp rnds, steady rnds, tap the trigger and xyz reload perk. We need perks that noticeably improve your weapon. D1 gave perks that literally maxed your stability stat, so I would like to see more perks that substantially buff your stability, handling, range and reload stats etc.

  • Really like the system! Except the only thing I would change is only parts from, for example auto rifles, could only be put on other auto rifles so it couldn’t get too broken

  • Been saying this for ages - guns get mods from broken down weapons. Breaking down fate bringer gives you an arc mod plus the outlaw mod ect. Adding the mods means one star is raised vs another lowered.

  • Weapon variety and perks is what really got me engaged in destiny. Sure it couldve been refined better then it was in d1 but the concept is so important for this game and I think was the driving motivation for alot of us. The system can work and be balanced but bungie needs to cut the useless perks out of the pool and just fill it with good perks so essentially every roll you got would be a good roll and came down to your preference. In d2 the fixed rolls and loot system altogether is really hurting this game in many ways but especially the replayability aspect. No more excitement for drops and rolls removed so much depth from the game imo.

  • We definitely need some improvement on the mod system. Can't understand why it is so basic right now. They could do so much more with this and give us some diversity in our playstyle depending on activities. I would love a tracking mod to slap on my curtain call....lol.

  • Not a terrible idea, but it will lead to severely OP weapons. Certain perks need to be locked to certain weapon types. Imagine luck in the chamber on a rocket launcher - no real effect in PvP, but it would destroy bosses in pve.

    • Maybe have some mods based on specific weapon types. Like a "Fanning the Hammer" mod for handcannons that lets you shoot any legendary handcannon like the last word at the cost of some impact and range.

      • Sounds good to me but if Bungie didn’t wanna bring back simple weapon rolls I doubt they will listen to any logic like this.

      • Interesting idea. One question, maybe it was a typo. Your modded Origin Story has a fire rate of 9000 rpm and retains its magazine of 32? You would empty the entire mag in .02 seconds. If this is your intended effect I'd be interested in seeing it. That'd almost be a shotgun firing rifle bullets. I can dig it.

        • I started posting it a couple of weeks ago, and apparently others have said it too: Make weapon mods give perks instead of element. Perks are locked to weapon types so some things aren't available for certain weapons (prevents OP builds). Some perks will be give/take e.g. more stability but less target acquisition. 3rd eye but slower in/out of scope.

          • This rings of what I've been saying for three years at this point, just with less detail. The customization I described went into frame weight, barrel length and type, the way rounds are chambered/fired (bolt action, semi-auto, three round burst, five round burst, double action, fully automatic, break barrel), ammo type/loads, magazine modification, underbarrel attachments (bayonets [with different bayonet types including double bladed, elemental, and yes, chainsaw], forward grip, hologram projector, charged aoe ground pound,...), sights and scopes,... The idea was find a drop with the base frame and caliber that supports the kind of modifications you want and have found, then let it advance, level up, and be adapted with you. It's an extension of yourself, your playstyle, and your personality. Exotics are one of a kind with bonuses that aren't offered by any dropped mod but have very little modification options (maybe sights, scopes, and forward grips). Talked about things for armor and other gear too, but I think you get the idea.

            • Not bad, but I don't think the devs want main perks to be interchangable (for the sake of PvP "balance"). Here's the idea I wrote up earlier this week: https://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/235991300/0/0
