The Elder Scrolls Lore #4: Morrowind and the Dunmer

Hey! You're back for more, huh? Well, today we travel North, to Morrowind! Home of the Dunmer, or Dark Elves! Dunmer As you may know from my Valenwood post all mainland Tamrielic Elves come from the Summerset Isles. They were exiled after the High Elves found out a group was worshiping Daedric Lords, like Azura, Molag Bal, Mephala, ect. They made the long exodus to Morrowind, which has the mighty Red Mountain in the middle of the island of Vvardenfell. The island of Solstheim also belongs to Morrowind, due to the Nords disowning it in 4E 16. To the west, the Velothi Mountains act as a border between Morrowind and Skyrim/Cyrodiil. The exiles where led by a mer named the Prophet Veloth. Once they got to Morrowind they would be attacked by Nordic ships, and couldn't be victorious until the scattered tribes United into the Dunmeri Houses. Houses are like clans, with more than just one family. The mighty six current houses are called the Houses of Telvanni, Indoril, Dres, Dagon, Sadras, and Redoran. There still exist tribes not belonging to any of the Great Houses, who are referred to as either Ashlanders or Velothi. Dunmeri Houses Telvanni As you may know from my last post, the Dunmeri are infamous slavers, specifically House Telvanni, made up of seclusionists wizards. But just because their wizards doesn't make them builders. The members of House Telvanni usually build towers, with a catch: there's no stairs. You have to have some sort of teleportation or levitation spells to get up, making the Telvanni look even more secluded. Most members of House Telvanni care only for themselves (not even other members of House Telvanni). That being said, they have only slightly worked with other houses. One such case is House Telvanni and Hlaalu destroying the monopoly of the Mage's Guild. It's thought that Telvanni Dunmer are necromancers, liches, or vampires. They have two capitols. Sadrith Mora on Vvardenfell and Port Telvannis, located on a small island of the northeastern coast of mainland Morrowind. The House is very rich, rivaling Imperial banks! Though they very oftenly use it all fighting each other in bickers and mismatches. The leaders of Telvanni towns usually change a lot, and sometimes start wars between towns. Redoran This house works to protect Morrowind from the Nords of Skyrim at the Velothi Mountains with war-hardened vets. House Redoran values these three things: Gravity, piety, and duty. There dominated lands are the Velothi Mountains, the Northwestern Highlands, parts of Solstheim, and the Great Valley. The Capitol is called Blacklight, at the northwestern tip of mainland Morrowind. Their Council Seat in The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind was located at Ald'ruhn. Duty is the respect of the house, it's people, and it's land. Gravity is the seriousness of living; if you live a lightweight life it's not living. Piety is Berber disrespecting the gods. A violation in any of these could result in expulsion, though duals are encouraged. They despise the Ashlanders, vampiric clans, and the thief organization. They aren't exactly in an alliance with anyone, but they admire the Fighter's Guild and the Imperial Legion, and the Tribunal Temple. The Council Seat town of Ald'ruhn was destroyed after a Daedric force ran rampant through it after the events of TES III: Morrowind. After their home inside the Dread Emperor crab died they were forced to resurrect it with necromantic spells, while Ald'ruhn was being demolished. Indoril House Indoril is a major political beacon in Morrowind due to their strong ties to the Tribunal Temple. This is why it's one of the most dominant Houses. During Tiber Septim's conquest the head of the Great Council, a council of greats from each house, was of Indoril, and was assassinated so that Morrowind would be apart of the Empire. Dres A House on Slave Trade and Agriculture, House Dres is unappreciative of the Empire as he house runs if slavery for their farms, and the Empire forbids slavery. It's also the house that's most conservative. During the wars following Talos's request Dres was one of three houses to not want Imperial rule. It's Capitol is Tear, a town near Argonia. Sandras A recently risen house. It came into recognition in the fourth era. Hlaalu, a House Disbanded As the name implies, the House was destroyed. Or I should say it was absorbed by the Empire. Dagoth This House was allied with the Dwemer during the Battle of Red Mountain. The War chief, Voryen Dagoth, had ties with the Dwarven King name Dumac. Voryen fought his brothers and sisters inside the Dwemer fortress alongside Dumac during the Battle of Red Mountain. Voryen was tasked with guarding the tools of the Dwemer that were for tapping the power of the Heart of Lorkhan. They'd use this power in the Numidium, the Dwemeri Brass God. Voryen asked to destroy the tools, but Nerevar said no and left to console with his councilors, Vivec, Almalexia, and Sotha Sil. They protected the tools, until Voryen was corrupted by the Heart of Lorkhan, and Nerevar had to mortally wound him before he could strike the Heart with the tools. Voryen, now Dagoth Ur, and 7 of House Dagoth, fled deeper into Red Mountain. There they lay until the end of the second era. Dagoth Ur bonded him and the followers directly to the Heart, drawing power from it. They created sleeper agents of the rest of the remaining House Dagoth. They joined the Sixth House Cult. Dagoth wanted all the Dunmer to have this power of Lorkhan. He created the Corprus, a disease of sorts. The Heart of Lorkhan was lost, and Dagoth had died because so. This could be called the death of House Dagoth. Ok, now that I've bored you with "Houses" let's get to where people lived! (History will have to wait for later) Towns and Cities Mournhold The Capitol of Morrowind, it has a circular design, with a plaza, bazaar, temple, and residence districts. Necrom It has been considered the necromancy Capitol of the world. It has huge religious powers, and it's people are from Indoril, so you know they're shnobs. Narsis A town in the middle of inland Morrowind. It's the Capitol of House Hlaalu. Blacklight The Capital for House Redoran, it was sacked by Daedric forces. Found at the very top left of Morrowind. Balmora The second largest city in Vvardenfell, it means "Stoneforest" in Dunmeris. It is made into 3 sections: aristocrats residence, the plaza, and the living quarters. Ald'ruhn Made into the cliffs of Red Mountain, it means Elder Home in Dunmeris. The buildings are a Redoran style of building. History will be for another post, as the houses took almost all post space :p To be continued...

    • You made a large error when describing Voryn Dagoth's association with Nerevar. Nerevar was not the Dwemer King, he was the Dunmer War Chief/High General/Hortator/Leader at the time of the Battle of Red Mountain. I forgot the name of the Dwemer King (I feel like his name was Numoc, though.), but he was friends with Nerevar and presented Nerevar with his iconic Moon-and-Star Ring. Also, no Dunmer house was allied with the Dwemer. Ever. (Mostly because they were the Chimer up until shortly after the Battle of Red Mountain) Also, Voryn Dagoth was tasked by Nerevar, Almalexia, Vivec, and Sotha Sil with guarding the Tools of Kagrenac so that they wouldn't be used until a decision was reached. Dagoth Ur went behind their backs and used the tools, then tempted them to use them but was struck down by Nerevar, but not before mortally wounding Nerevar in the process. It was Nerevar's dying wish that Almalexia, Vivec, and Sotha Sil swear by Azura that they would not use the tools, and they later broke that promise angering the Daedric Prince, who cursed them and the Chimer, turning all of them into the Dunmer. She also prophesized Nerevar's return, who would later be known as the Nerevarine. That's how the Dunmer and Tribunal came to be. I may not be fully aware of houses being destroyed or new houses, but I'm fairly sure you misspelled House Dagoth several times, because I've never heard of a House Dagon before. Did they name themselves after Mehrunes Dagon or something? I'm fairly certain that House Telvanni doesn't care either way about slavery, since they're fickle mage-lords and all, and that House Indoril was the large slaver House, but I know House Dres also had a large hand in the slave trade, so it could go either way. Redoran was fairly spot on though. I think I remember Sandras being mentioned by someone in Dragonborn. Maybe one of the two leaders of Ravenrock? You didn't really touch on Hlaalu at all and I'm fairly certain they weren't absorbed by the Empire at the time of TES:3-4, but I'm not sure if by the time of TES:5 if they had disbanded or not. Probably some dialogue in Dragonborn I may not remember or had missed. The rest of the post is pretty good, but I keep seeing in other posts how you call the Altmer (High Elves) the Aldmer, (Ancestor/Elder Elves) which is inherently incorrect, just thought I'd point that out. TL;DR: If you don't care about lore, don't bother because this is just nitpicking OPs post to correct some mistakes/point out some things.
