Customization and Curated Content.

It seems there's, idk must be at least two, players upset about accessing content without TTK DLC. Their woes are worth validating, at least to the point of asking interesting design questions. It doesn't have to be all doom and gloom in the future. I think a lot of gripes players experienced over the course of this game is with a lack of choice or control. There's been debacles with unfair RNG with loot, weapon nerfs, game bugs being fixed starting with bugs that lead to loot fastest, and more in regard to Destiny's loot and economy. However, I'm referring to how players navigate the content in Destiny and how we have no ability to customize our content experience. For example, there's no custom games option for pvp. What if custom games were a thing? Of course, a custom game probably wouldn't count toward bounties or reward loot or marks, but think about it. We could choose to have Infinite ammo, infinite grenades, infinite melee and infinite supers. Maybe you choose to let players equip as many exotics as they can. Maybe you specify the load out for each class and sub class. Imagine if we could place any piece of gear in a level just for that one custom match. Refine our options so we can specify overall damage output, armor values, speed values, gravity values and so forth. Sure, there's logistical issues with having temporary access to any single piece of gear that's existed in the game, and having options to alter physics might be complicated, but it could be entertaining. Now, imagine Bungie bringing back the forge mode. Something to the effect of a level editor where you can customize enemy spawns. There's perhaps too many variables in making a forge editor, yes, but just think about it for a moment. Players could place rival enemy troops that clash similar to the Urzok the hated instances. For example, creating an arena where Blades of Crota charge out at Packs of Wolves. Heck, consider making Crota square off against Atheon. I know, I know, completely breaks all lore and the two baddies in the same room would probably introduce unseen bugs that would shatter the galaxy, but dare to dream! Maybe something along the lines of Prison of Elders bosses could be more easily customized. Oh, Prison of Elders. Bungie had so much untapped potential with PoE. Imagine if it had a custom games option, tho. You could customize the amount of waves, the enemy types, the modifier types and how modifiers are added/removed, boss wave frequency and so forth. Maybe get saucy and customize the maps. Let's fight Cabal on Firebase Delphi. Don't stop there, let's clash boss waves, too. My final round might have Valus Trau'ug task his Broken Legion against The Flame Prince Urrox. Unfortunately, PoE was another activity that was crafted with slightly modified rotations and devoid of any customization. Okay, some suggestions would require a lot of development time, but that's not necessarily the biggest constraint. Probably the biggest constraint is that the things I spit-balled don't mesh with Destiny's design philosophy. This is where people can get salty. There's theories about planned obsolescence, about removing content, about hamster wheels and slot machines and exploitative behavioral science. There's solid discussion about all that and what is or isn't reasonable. Right now, I'm considering how Destiny guides players through content. For better or worse, Destiny curates its content experience for players. True, all content is available as mission, strike, raid and patrol nodes on various planets in the "main menu." However, the true curated experience is provided through imposed daily, weekend, and weekly resets and rotations of events and playlists for the player. An inherent stipulation with an always online game is that you're forced to access servers to play, and those servers control how you navigate and play. This means you're at the mercy of what the servers allow you to choose and change. Currently, there's not much customization beyond selecting an activity and sometimes the level of the activity. Right now there's a bit of an identity crisis on how Destiny should provide content without TTK DLC. How should you be allowed to play year one content. What is year one content? What does it mean to be allowed to play purchased components of this game? I'm not that interested in trying to impose answers to those questions. As I mentioned, for better or worse, Destiny curates its content to players. Those curating reasons, motives and methods are debatable, but what if Bungie threw in some customization choices? Realistically, it's too late now to expect custom games or forge modes to the degree I might imagine. Surely, though, some forms of customization could be possible. It's not a silver bullet, but maybe as Destiny adds content to it's curated rotations it could also add some customization options and modes to the content added as well. It's strange to think about spending time playing Destiny on an activity that wouldn't offer loot or rewards at all. The reward would instead be customizing the content to try to make a fun new experience worth sharing. Perhaps, the hamster wheel would seem less insidious if there were an easel and canvas sitting next to it. You know... just for the lols.
