After finally finishing Spartan Ops how do you propose the composer actually works
We know how it works. Here's 343i's official description:
"The Composer is one of the few non-Precursor devices that exploit neural physics, the peculiar science of that most ancient of species which defied Forerunner understanding, even after millions of years of study. The high-energy fields of entangled sympathies emitted by the Composer envelop any living being with a sufficient complexity to resonate with the device. The Composer breaks down their bodies into digital templates in a manner that eluded the full understanding of even its creators. The resulting imprints, or essences, were remarkably similar to high-level ancilla, and stored mentalities could even be given consciousness by emulating their original biological neural structure."
it's purpose and why there is evidence of the New Phoenix incident in a Knight's memories?
Well, it's original purpose was to make Forerunners immortal. However, when the Master Builder found out about the project, he repurposed it for his own needs in regards to the human-Forerunner war. After a while, the Composers were never used again until the Didact Composed his Prometheans along with the humans of Omega Halo and Gamma Halo. He used the essences to drive his mechanical Promethean Knights, which were supplemented by the low level AI Crawlers and Watchers.
So why is the evidence of the Didact's attack on New Phoenix in the Knights' memories? That's because all the Promethean Knights you face in Spartan Ops are driven by the composed souls of New Phoenix's residents.
