Where in the books? The games are the highest form of canon outside of actual 343i writers and the only time kit is seen is in Reach, and even then it's very sparing.

Yes. Official Bungie/343 books Games Comics Anime References to backpacks are made repeatedly throughout the books - there is no outright 'Spartans carry rucksacks', but instead sentences like 'john picked up a handful of spare magazines and put them in his pack'.
