Guardian API Stability and Data Integrity

To Bungie: Fix the Stats, Preserve the Record The community of Guardians relies entirely on the stability and accuracy of the Destiny 2 Application Programming Interface (API). When our accumulated history—our K/D, our Flawless runs, our total kills—vanishes or fails to update, it undermines the very foundation of effort and achievement we invest in the game. "A Broken API Is a Broken Memory." This phrase captures the essence of our demand. With the launch of major expansions like Renegades, we acknowledge the complexity of backend changes. However, the recurring pattern of stat-tracking failures is unacceptable. The Core Mandate We demand that the following principles regarding API functionality and data integrity be adhered to, effective immediately with the launch of the Renegades expansion: 1. Zero-Tolerance for Tracking Degradation * The Problem: Existing, previously tracked statistics often stop updating, become "stuck," or are retroactively reset following major API updates. A broken API is a broken memory. * The Demand: Bungie must treat historical stat tracking as immutable. Any changes to the underlying data structure (like stat reworks or new activity types) must include a robust data migration plan that ensures all pre-existing, earned stats are correctly mapped and continue to update seamlessly. They better fix the known, recurring stat tracker bugs (like those affecting specific emblems or niche activity stats) with the Renegades patch. 2. Timely API Documentation and Support * The Problem: Third-party developers often have little warning or incomplete documentation for major API changes, leading to prolonged downtime for essential community tools like Destiny Tracker. * The Demand: Bungie’s API team must collaborate with key third-party partners prior to major expansion launches. This includes providing early access to API manifest changes and running a stabilized beta environment to allow developers to adapt their tools, ensuring Destiny Tracker's core functionality is operational within 24 hours of the full game launch. 3. Data Accuracy and Transparency * The Problem: Discrepancies exist between what is shown in-game and what the API reports (and thus what Destiny Tracker shows). * The Demand: The API must be the single source of truth for all player data. If a stat is broken or being deprecated, Bungie must clearly communicate this in the patch notes and on the Bungie API forum, not let the community discover the failure after weeks of playing. Conclusion Our investment in Destiny 2 is measured in time, gear, and stats. Destiny Tracker and other community tools are the digital monuments to that investment. *A broken API is a broken memory.* Bungie, fix the API and let us track our accomplishments, or the achievements lose their value.
