TLDR - Destiny 2 ending is sad, but it was an awesome experience.
I don't know how many people are in the same boat, but I've gotten on Destiny 2 pretty much daily since the alpha. Because of that Destiny eventually became a constant throughout my life. So much so that I'm in the top 3% of play time.
So yes, it was really lame that someone in his 30's such as myself teared up seeing the announcement. I pretty much stopped playing when Edge of Fate dropped, but this is still like losing a home away from home.
This is the best possible end though. Think about it, would you prefer EoF 2.0 lazily slapped together or the Ole Yeller treatment allowing for a vaguely dignified end?
I'm sure Marathon will save the business though. Catering to sweats and ignoring everyone casual is clearly the right move. I mean, nobody liked booting up Destiny and joining dance circles in the tower, or sparrow racing, maybe running a strike or patrol with friends and talking about their day.
OH, WAIT PvE mode in Marathon? Hm...
I did legitimately want Marathon to do well, but after putting time into it I realized a neat art style and good atmosphere isn't enough. That and extraction shooters just aren't fun to me. Not to mention the catastrophic loss of trust in Bungie. "We are listening" is a lie, and it will always be followed by minor improvement and a whiplash of the worst, most out of touch decisions.
All that to say; the good times were amazing, and the bad times were frequent. From the Speaker thrashing Ghaul to Dinklebot talking about witches coming from the moon. Curse of Osiris being bad and Forsaken completely redeeming Destiny. The endless cycle of good content followed by what we thought couldn't get worse. This has been an absolute Rollercoaster.
But, in the end, It always was my favorite.
Keep those eyes up, guardians.
